Modified Bitumen
An asphalt based roof membrane modified by one or more polymers such as Atactic Polypropylene (APP) or Styrene Butadiene Styrene (SBS) to form a flexible durable roof, typically with a granule surfacing.
Methods of Application
Cold Applied
A cold applied modified bitumen roof membrane is set in a cold process, using an asphalt-based adhesive as it is being applied. Adhesives can be spread with a notched squeegee or spray applied just prior to installing the modified bitumen membrane.
Torch Applied
A torch applied modified bitumen roof membrane is heated using an open flame torch, flameless propane torch or hot air welder to melt the bottom side of the modified bitumen sheet as it is being applied.
Hot Applied
A hot applied modified bitumen roof membrane uses hot roofing asphalt in the application process.
Self Adhered
A self adhered modified bitumen membrane is one where the bottom surface is covered with an adhesive and a layer of release paper. The membrane will adhere to a substrate without the use of any additional adhesive material.
